Towards COP31: From Global Policy to Local Action in the Mediterranean

Project Launch and Introduction Webinar

The Mediterranean Basin is one of the regions most severely affected by climate change, facing multidimensional risks including drought, wildfires, heatwaves, declining water resources, biodiversity loss, and sea-level rise. These challenges threaten not only natural ecosystems but also the region's socioeconomic fabric, particularly sectors such as tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and coastal economies.

Against this backdrop, the Global Climate Academy is launching the project "Towards COP31: From Global Policy to Local Action in the Mediterranean" to bring together civil society organizations, local governments, professional associations, the private sector, and academia across the Mediterranean within a common platform for dialogue and collaboration.

What Will Be Discussed?

The launch webinar, to be held on 30 July 2026, will focus on:

• The economic, social, and ecological impacts of climate change on Mediterranean coastal cities

• Good practices for strengthening climate resilience

• International climate negotiations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the COP process

• The role of civil society in shaping and implementing climate policies

• Mediterranean priorities in the lead-up to COP31

The programme will also include an interactive session inviting participants to contribute to the development of a shared Mediterranean climate agenda. Priorities and collaboration mechanisms for the Blue Advocacy Network, to be established within the project, will also be discussed.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation on the Road to COP31

The project aims to support the development of a common civil society perspective from the Mediterranean region in preparation for COP31. By fostering knowledge exchange among stakeholders from different sectors, strengthening joint advocacy capacity, and promoting regional priorities within national and international climate policy processes, the initiative seeks to enhance the region's contribution to global climate action.

• Chambers of commerce and industry, professional organizations, artisan and trade associations, and sectoral associations
