COP31 in Türkiye

The 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31), to be held in Antalya in November 2026, positions Türkiye not only as the host of the negotiations but also as a visible and influential actor within the platforms where global climate governance is shaped.

Ahead of this critical milestone, the Global Climate Academy Association organized a closed roundtable meeting in Ankara on 29 January 2026 to address the strategic positioning of civil society in Türkiye in relation to the COP31 Negotiation and Action Agenda processes and to establish a shared basis for assessment. The meeting was held in cooperation with the Association of Civil Society Development Center (STGM) and with the participation of a limited number of civil society organizations.

The discussions focused on the role of the nine Major Groups and Stakeholders,

representing all segments of society as defined in the outcome document of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, within COP negotiation and implementation processes. In addition, the Climate Action Agenda carried out through the High-level Climate Champion appointed under the Paris Agreement was examined, along with how civil society in Türkiye could contribute more effectively to this agenda.

In particular, the meeting highlighted:

• The current position and visibility of major groups within COP processes in Türkiye,

• The diplomatic, institutional, and societal opportunities that COP31 presents for Türkiye,

• The strengthening of preparation, coordination, and cooperation mechanisms at the civil society level.

  
  

As a concluding statement, the critical importance of the Global Climate Academy Association’s role in fostering a common language, a shared strategy, and an interaction framework aligned with international platforms among civil society actors in Türkiye throughout the COP31 process was emphasized. The Academy will continue its efforts to provide knowledge-based input, strengthen capacity, and support multi-stakeholder dialogue in the lead-up to COP31 to be held in Antalya.
